National Taiwan University provided PBC with an experience of a lifetime. Throughout our campus tour, students were able to visit student spaces, engage with students, visit state of the art facilities, and be welcomed by retired professors who taught at National Taiwan University, and study in the United States. One of the most amazing things about the university was how it provided so many graduate degrees in English, while also providing Mandarin classes for free. Students felt extremely safe, not only at this university, but in the country of Taiwan. We had many students, especially young women, who felt inspired to move to Taiwan to pursue a graduate degree upon completion of their bachelors degree in the United States. Shout out to Bo, Jimmy (a retired professor), and Lily (an alumna from the Department of History) for providing tours of this amazing campus. Shout out to all of the students who spoke to us about their experiences, and shared words of encouragement with our community.
Castlemont’s Deep East Oakland youth were in building or better yet, the city of Jiufen. Jiufen is a small town in the mountains outside of Taipei. It used to be a gold mining town. The Japanese found it years ago during the Qing Dynasty where gold was discovered. Jiufen became a popular destination from Spirited Away, which is a Japanese anime film. Lol! We had multiple connections throughout this journey with Japan, Taiwan and Philippines. One thing we’ll never forget is the elusive beauty, amazing boba, delicious dishes, and red lanterns that hid this town in the luscious green hills of Taiwan’s quiet yet bustling countryside. This town was special!! Until we meet again in life Jiufen!
houtout to KTVU for covering our story and really helping our Deep East Oakland community be seen! We truly hope that more schools throughout Oakland will join and be apart of our cultural bridge.
